Brief introduction of Wenshan Teachers’ College

　　Wenshan Teachers’ College (WSTC) is located on Xuefu Road, in Wenshan city, which is the capital city of the Zhuang & Miao Minority Nationalities Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, in The People’s Republic of China. Geographically, it neighbors Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in the east and reaches the capital city Kunming in the west. It borders Vietnam in the south and with Qujun city on the north. Wenshan is well-known as “A City of Pseudo Ginseng” and its magnificent landscapes, especially Puzhehei Water Lily Lake and Xanadu in Bamei. It is an age-old city with a rich ethnic minorities history, of brilliant civilization with a total of 11 ethnic groups,including the Zhuang, Miao, Yi, Yao, Hui, Dai, Buyi, Bai, Gelao and Mongolian, etc. The college covers over 400 mu and the construction area is over 100,000 square meters. Since approved by Yunnan provincial government in 1984, there have been more than 6100 graduates, 3500 adult graduates and more than 25,000 high school, primary school teachers and different professional trainers graduated from the college. This has been a great contribution to the economic development, social development and education development in Yunnan province.
　　The college has set up 10 departments with 26 majors which includes Chinese Department (Chinese Language and Literature Education), Politics and History Department (Politics Education and History Education), Mathematics and Physics Department (Mathematics Education, Physics Education and Educational Technology), Bio-Chemistry Department (Biology Education, Chemistry Education, Geography Education, Elementary Education, Food Nutrition and Examination and Technology of Chinese Herbs Production), Music Department (Music Education, Music Performance, Music Education of five-year-college Study), Art Department (Art Education, Artistic Designing and Art Education of five-year-college Study), Foreign Languages Department (English Education, English Education of five-year-college Study), PE Department (Physical Education), Computer Science Department (Computer Education, Applied Technology of Computer and Computer Education of five-year-college Study), Social Science Department (Elementary Education, Preschool Education and Preschool Education of five-year-college Study). With the credit system started in 1999, the students are able to choose the courses, the teachers and the course time according to their own inclinations. This is good for developing the individual character of the students.
　　Through the hard work of the past twenty years, the total number of the college staff is 334. Among these are 213 teachers, 53 professors or associate professors and 68 lecturers. The total number of on-campus regular students is 4016 and that of the adult students is 4670. WSTC has become one of the important teacher training bases in Yunnan.
The college also puts emphasis on international cooperation and exchange programs. The college has invited Zhang Yaping, a academician, to be the honorary president of the college and also invited famous scholar Lin Chaomin and outstanding artist Sheng Zhongguo to be the visiting professors. Communication and cooperation agreements have been signed between WSTC and some universities and institutions in the United States and Thailand giving the opportunity for Students and visiting scholar exchange programs and cultural communication programs to be conducted between both parties. Through VSO (Voluntary Services Overseas) more than ten volunteers from the United Kingdom, the United States, France, Belgium, and Australia have been invited to work in the college. The Foreign Chinese language teaching program has offered a good opportunity for international students to learn the Chinese language and learn about Chinese culture, and now there are international students from the United States and Canada studying in the college.
　　The college now has established a computer center, an electronic education center, a provincial level training base for teachers, a satellite signal receiving system, a two-way closed-circuit TV signal receiving system, four language labs and ten multi-media classrooms. Equipped with these facilities, the long-distance education for the students of TV education can go fairly well. Seventeen qualified labs and one electronic reading room have been set up for such subjects as mechanics, thermotics, electricity, optics, atomic physics, electrical engineering, electronic technology, , organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, botany, zoology, human physiology, tissue culture, microorganism and phonetics. In the college library, the total number of books is up to 300.000. And there are 600 kinds of magazines and newspapers. A campus network which cost 1.5 million Yuan is in effect, and a modern, multi-functional resources center of information has also been set up. There are a few exercise and entertainment facilities on campus and they are available for all the teachers and students all day long.
　　The Biological Resources Development & Research Center and the Minority Cultures Research Organization are responsible for the research and development of the natural sciences and social sciences. Depending on a comprehensive academic magazine ‘The Journal of Wenshan Teachers’ College’ which is issued both domestically and abroad, and ‘The Wenshan Teachers’ College Newspaper’, the college has now created a very active academic environment. The Fifteen-Year Plan and the 2015 Developing Project of Wenshan Teachers’ College is being carried out well as schedule. It is believed that with all the staffs’ and students’ efforts, WSTC will become a comprehensive and promising university and be a great contribution to the local economic and social development.
